Catastrophe in Kware Slum - 7th September 2009

We are receiving reports about an emerging situation happening right now in Kware Slum.

Gangs have been sent into the slum to clear areas of homes, shops and schools to enable a road to be built.
This has been ordered by the government.

The slum residents have no recognised rights and constantly live in fear of losing their homes.

The current situation is that many hundreds of people have been left homeless, out on the street with their meagre belongings. Bull dozers moved in whilst people were still in their homes and Fair Oak school had a wall demolished whilst the children were inside. This is appalling treatment but sadly these people are regularly treated like second class citizens.

Roger of Wings of Mercy reported being in tears as he watched people including children being thrown out of their homes often violently. This also happened whilst people slept, with their locks being broken and gangs breaking into their homes to physically throw them out.

People had to sleep on the street which is muddy and running with sewage due to rains. This results in heightened disease especially for children and pregnant women.

Roger reported visiting a woman who is caring for a two week old baby abandoned by her mother. The mother felt there was no way she could care for the baby amidst the dreadful sitiuation in the slum and decidied to give up her child.

This situation is ongoing. Wings of Mercy will help where possible and will monitor the situation of the sponsored children involved.
