Chicken Project - July 2008

Funds raised by Lymington Montessori school and South Baddesley C. of E. school, Hampshire, have helped Blue Sky Academy, Masaai Village slum, start a chicken project. A chicken house and run have been built and the children and teachers are being taught about caring for the chickens. It costs approximately 50 pence to buy 1 chick and the aim is to commence with 30 chicks who will grow into egg laying chickens.

This is going to provide much needed protein for the children plus training in chicken husbandry. There is much excitement surrounding the project in the school and community. Combined with the installation of the water tank, the chicken project has encouraged parents and guardians to send their children to the school so numbers have greatly increased.

The aim is for the project to grow becoming a true community project. It will provide work for local people, and eggs which supply a valuable source of protein, something which many of the children are grossly deficient in.

After being presented with the gift of a chicken, Debbie of Wings of Mercy UK decided to call her Mercy and present her to the school as the chicken project mascot. It appears she has settled in well and is happy with the cockerel who has also taken residence.
