28th August 08 - Urgent appeal for Feeding Programme.

The schools we help are facing a crisis with their feeding programmes.

Simple feeding programmes aim to feed the children one meal a day - in the last few months the cost of living in Kenya has risen sharply with the costs of basic foods rising over 33%.

Many of the schools are now facing the situation where they do not have any food to feed the children. This actually means that if there is no feeding programme, the children will not eat at all and will have to resort to scavenging from rubbish dumps and the sewage. One of the saddest things Debbie and Roger of Wings of Mercy UK ever saw was a child eating half a discarded orange straight out of the running raw sewage.

The feeding programme also helps to encourage the children to attend school where they gain an education, are fed and can be monitored for health and well being. The children also attend in the holidays for food as it saves them having to go to the streets to find food. Without the programme, there is less of an incentive to attend school and the children can become lost to any care we can offer them. Also many of the children are HIV positive - if they are receiving medication, without adequate diet, the drugs will not work and will actually make them very sick.

£30 will buy a sack of rice which will provide a basic meal. The children also require beans and maize for protein which will cost around the same price.

This is a personal plea from Head Teacher Laighdon Ajega from the Hope Restoration Centre School - Kibera slum, which we support:

"We have 110 needy children that benefit from our feeding programme. For now the food in our store is finished. We appeal for your support to help these children to not go back to the street."

Please support these amazing people and ultimately give the children a chance of an education, health and daily food. Thank you.
