On
the 16th of August 2005 Wings of Mercy commenced the training of our
first intake of students in HIV and AIDS counselling in Nairobi. The
students included nurses, counsellors, health workers, university students,
people with AIDS and HIV and care givers. The students qualified in
October as HIV and AIDS counsellors and were presented with certificates. This training continues and has helped many more people become qualified.
It costs Wings of Mercy 2400 Kenyan Shillings (around £23) to train up one person.
We also visit youth groups and schools to educate about HIV/AIDS, self awareness, relationships and abuse. This is vital in Kenya where HIV/AIDS is on the increase and is affecting everybody directly or indirectly. A whole generation has been affected and parents and valuable workers such as teachers and health workers have been lost. It is vital that the new generation of children and youths have access to education in order to make safe choices, abolish stigma and halt the progression of the pandemic.
Wings of Mercy is currently working with those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS through community health workers and the training of people involved in caring for their family and friends. This is done through working closely with other organisations and supporting groups involved in self help / empowerment. We also need volunteers with experience or HIV/AIDS training to assist.
